Cardio vs Weight Training?? Which type of exercise is more important for losing weight? For those of you who are wondering who would win this fight, I would like to have a very interesting discussion with you! One that will hopefully get you thinking differently and more willing to try new things.

Here is the most famous question from people trying to lose weight...."Do I really need cardio to get in great shape?" Most fitness buffs, and weekend warriors that are trying to get in shape consider that they need "traditional cario." Well I totally disagree with that statement! I believe that the common, low level, boring cardio is only for people that are not really serious about getting fit and healthy! So lets look closely at cardio vs weight training!

Sooo, what exactly is cardio? Most people believe cardio to be pumping away mindlessly on a treadmill, or stationary bike, while watching TV at their state of the art gym. This is "Traditional Cardio!" No wonder people get bored out of their minds after a short time and give up on their workouts! But if you take a closer look at what cardio really is, you will see that it's really any type of exercise that strengthens the cardiovascular system. So if it gets your heart pumpin, and has you gasping for air, than its cardio!

Lets take a look at some examples of "non traditional" cardio! Take a dumbbell that is a challenging weight to you! Now do a clean & press which involves lifting the dumbbell from the floor up to your shoulders, then push it over your head. Most people think that this is only a strength training exercise. Now...here's the challenge for you! Do a set of 10-15 reps as quickly as you can while maintaining good form, and you will notice that your heart rate is probably about 80% of your recommended max. You are gasping for air like you just ran a 100 yard sprint. Now tell me...do you think that this type of exercise will condition your heart better than a moderate and boring jog?

Now, try 5 minutes straight of body weight squats, lunges, and push ups with little or no rest in between. Try and tell me that this style of training is not conditioning your heart! Conventional thinkers say that these are only strength training exercises. But the good thing is that you are fulfilling your cardio needs and your strength training needs at the same time. Not only do you save time, but you are strengthening every muscle in your body in a much more efficient way!

So....in the battle of cardio vs weight training, who is the winner? Well as long as you understand what cardio really is....then the answer is....Both! High intensity weight training is cardio. And it is way more effective than traditional cardio. You will see faster results with high intensity workouts than if you do a moderate workout on a bike at the gym.
