Triglycerides Facts Finally Explained!
Here is the medical definition of Triglycerides. It is a naturally occurring ester of three fatty acids and glycerol that is the chief constituent of fats and oils. Ok now…what does that mean in English?
It is made from the fats eaten in foods or just made in our body from another energy source like carbohydrates. Triglycerides are the chemical form that fat exists in food. Calories that we ingest in a meal and not use immediately are converted to Triglycerides and then transported to fatty cells to be stored. Our bodies use hormones to regulate the release of Triglycerides from the fat that our bodies use for energy between meals.
Dangers of Triglycerides!
Excess Triglycerides can be linked to coronary artery disease in some people. High levels of Triglycerides may be a a symptom of another disease like diabetes. It is important to know your levels so that you can fix any problems before its to late.
The National Cholesterol Education Program guidelines for triglycerides are:
Normal................Less than 150 mg/dL
Borderline-high.......150 to 199 mg/dL
High..................200 to 499 mg/dL
Very high.............500 mg/dL or higher
American Heart Association Treatment Recommendation.
